Why read a book?
I’ve always seen reading as a transformative act. At a very young age, I was encouraged to go to bookstores and pick out what I wanted, as a reward for doing good. I looked forward to these trips as a kid, and I savoured every new book that I got. I read them everywhere - on vacation, or in the dark car rides on the way home (where I'd always get scolded!).
I know that having access to books is a privilege, which is why I tried to be mindful of my picks. I picked up books that will be appreciated by a wide age range, at different price points as well. I believe that acquiring a book is an investment in yourself, and your capacity to be changed for the better by it. But if, for example, buying books isn’t in your priority at the moment - that's fine too! I've made my list public so if you have access to your local library or the library of a friend - you can always, always borrow.
I am the person that I am today because of the many books that have made their mark on me. This book club is a small initiative on my part, in hopes that I can encourage my peers and fans to pick up a book (or two, or more!) and have the opportunity to change their lives in small or big ways. As part of this generation, it’s inevitable that we spend so much of our time in front of screens. Maybe we can take short breaks from that, and allow ourselves to be found in between the fly leaf beginnings of a great adventure.
A massive thanks to Fully Booked for being my partner on this. They have been a beautiful haven for all Filipino book lovers over the years, and I’m so glad that they trust and support my vision of advocating the love of reading to everyone.
